I’ve published six books: Matters of Life and Faith (essays, Coventry Press 2021), We. Are. Family. (novel, MidnightSun Publishing 2016), Dodging the Bull (short fiction, Wakefield Press 2007) and three collections of poetry – Minorphysics (IP 2003), Awake Despite the Hour (Five Islands Press 2007) and Standard Variation (Walleah Press 2014). Minorphysics won the IP Picks Poetry National Award for an unpublished Australian manuscript, and Standard Variation was short-listed for the John Bray Adelaide Writers’ Week poetry prize.

My poemsessays and stories have appeared in many publications, including: ABC Religion and EthicsThe Age, The Australian, Antipodes (US), Best Australian Stories and Poems, Canberra Times, Cordite, Eureka Street, Going Down Swinging, Griffith Review, Heat, Island, Meanjin, Overland, Rolling Stone (Aus)., Sun-Herald, Southerly and Westerly.

I’ve won, been placed or commended in many literary prizes, including The University of Canberra national short story prize, The Newcastle Short Story Award, Ada Cambridge prize for biographical fiction, the Arts Queensland Val Vallis Award for Poetry, the Dinny O’Hearn short story prize and the My Brother Jack short story prize. I’ve also judged literary prizes, including the Victorian Premier’s Award for Poetry and the Grace Marion Wilson Emerging Writers Prize.

I’m currently hired as a co-writer on a feature film with director Chris Nelius (Girls Can’t Surf - documentary), and I’ve written and written/performed several works for stage. Performed by Silas Aiton, Ragdoll was staged at La Mama Theatre, Carlton as part of the short play series Dark/Light in 2014. I wrote and performed the comedy show Being a Wheel Family at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2013. As If Nothing Is Happening, my poetry-meets-music album with Bill Buttler, was performed at La Mama Theatre, Northcote’s Wesley Ann and Gasworks Theatre in Port Melbourne. My latest monologue-meets-music album, My Coffin Lid, My Shield, a collaboration with Simon Mason, was performed at The Night Heron, Footscray in 2019.

I’ve been a guest, host or performed at many festivals, including the Melbourne Writers Festival, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Williamstown Writers Festival, Scone Literary Festival, Brimbank Writers Festival, Monstalvat Festival of Poetry and Song, the Overload Poetry Festival, and the Melbourne Spoken Word Festival. I have a PhD in Creative Writing from La Trobe University, and I’ve taught creative writing at tertiary level for twelve years. I’ve also run writers workshops at numerous schools, and writers’ groups in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.
